Cardiology
Paediatric Cardiac Care / Congenital Heart Defects
- Atrial Septal Defect (ASD): A hole in the wall between the heart’s upper chambers.
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): A hole in the wall between the heart’s lower chambers.
- Tetralogy of Fallot: A complex defect involving four heart problems.
- Transposition of the Great Vessels: A condition where the heart’s main arteries are switched.
- Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA): A blood vessel that remains open after birth.
- Coarctation of the Aorta: Narrowing of the aorta, the main artery leaving the heart.
- Truncus Arteriosus: A condition where there is only one major artery leaving the heart instead of two.
- Tricuspid Atresia: A condition where the tricuspid valve is absent or underdeveloped.
Acquired Heart Conditions
These heart problems develop later in life and can include:
- Aortic Valve Stenosis: Narrowing of the aortic valve.
- Pulmonary Stenosis: Narrowing of the pulmonary valve.
- Heart Failure: A condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively.
- Heart Transplant: In severe cases, a heart transplant may be necessary.
Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery
- Coronary Artery Disease: Narrowing or blockage of the arteries supplying blood to the heart, often treated with procedures like coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
- Heart Valve Problems: Repair or replacement of damaged heart valves (aortic, mitral, etc.).
- Congenital Heart Defects: Conditions present at birth, such as holes in the heart or abnormal blood vessel connections, which may require surgical correction.
- Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections: Weakened or torn sections of the aorta, the body’s main artery, requiring repair or replacement.
- Heart Failure: Surgery may be necessary to improve heart function or to install devices like ventricular assist devices (VAD) or total artificial hearts (TAH).
- Arrhythmia Management: Irregular heartbeats, which can sometimes be treated with procedures like maze surgery or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placement.
- Heart Transplantation: Replacing a diseased heart with a healthy donor heart.
