Opthalmology

Vision Correction:

  • Refractive Surgery: Addresses conditions like near sightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
    • LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis): Reshapes the cornea using a laser to correct refractive errors.
    • PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): Another laser-based procedure to reshape the cornea.
    • Refractive Lens Exchange: Replaces the natural lens with an artificial one for sharper focus, often used for presbyopia and severe hyperopia.
  • Cataract Surgery: Removes the clouded natural lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens) to restore vision.
  • After-cataract laser surgery

Glaucoma Treatment:

  • Trabeculectomy: Creates a new opening to drain fluid from the eye, lowering eye pressure.
  • Trabeculoplasty: Enlarges the drainage angle to improve fluid outflow.
  • Iridotomy: Creates a small hole in the iris using a laser to allow fluid to flow, often used for narrow-angle glaucoma.

Retinal Conditions:

Retinal Procedures:

  • Retinal Detachment Repair: Addresses a condition where the retina separates from the back of the eye.
  • Retinal Tear Repair: Repairs tears in the retina to prevent detachment.
  • Panretinal Photocoagulation (PRP): Lasers the ischemic retinal periphery to prevent neovascularization, often used for diabetic retinopathy.
  • Laser Retinopexy: Lasers around a retinal tear to prevent progression to a detachment.
  • Vitrectomy: A procedure to remove the vitreous gel (the gel-like substance that fills the eye) and address conditions like retinal detachment or diabetic retinopathy.

Corneal Conditions:

  • Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty): Replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy donor cornea.
  • Partial Thickness Corneal Transplant (Lamellar Keratoplasty): A partial thickness corneal transplant.
  • Full Thickness Corneal Transplant (Penetrating Keratoplasty): A full thickness corneal transplant.

Oculoplastic Surgery (Reconstructive Eye Surgery):

  • Blepharoplasty: Repairs drooping eyelids or eyelids that don’t close properly.
  • Tear Duct Reconstruction: Repairs tear duct obstruction.
  • Orbital Fracture Repair: Repairs fractures in the bony socket around the eye.
  • Tumor Excision: Removes tumors in and around the eyes.
  • Facial Rejuvenation: Includes procedures like eye lifts, skin resurfacing, brow lifts, and excision of xanthelasma.

Other Procedures:

  • Strabismus Surgery: Corrects crossed eyes or other eye alignment issues.
  • Foreign Object Removal: Removes objects from the eye.
  • Diagnosis and Monitoring: Ophthalmologists also play a vital role in diagnosing and monitoring various eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and immune conditions.
  • Injections around the eyes and face: To alter facial structure, function, and appearance.
  • Nasolacrimal duct probing
  • Eye muscle revision
  • Eye lesion removal
  • Iris removal
